Common Sense Is Dead, and So Are Empathy and Intelligence

A distressed man in a gray t-shirt screams with his hands pressed to the sides of his head, eyes shut tightly. Large bold text above him reads “COMMON SENSE IS DEAD!” in white and red, followed by “SO ARE EMPATHY AND INTELLIGENCE” in bright yellow. The Uncivil Truth logo featuring a megaphone and broken chains appears in the lower left, with Uncivil-Truth.blogspot.com URL and copyright printed at the bottom.

Somewhere along the way, the country ran out of common sense and replaced it with TikTok takes and bumper sticker politics. Compassion packed its bags. Intelligence threw itself into a woodchipper. And all we’re left with now is a population of self-obsessed jackals gnawing on the last nerve of anyone who still thinks decency matters.

People used to disagree and still sit at the same table. Now they fling conspiracy theories like hot grease and call it conversation. The loudest voices belong to the least informed, and the ones who actually know something are too exhausted to argue. You can have ten degrees and be ignored while a YouTuber with a ring light and half a brain screams about lizard people and gets booked on a morning show.

We’ve glamorized ignorance. Celebrated stupidity. Put clowns in office and called it a movement. Politicians openly lie on camera, and instead of holding them accountable, we get think pieces about their “media strategy.” Strategy? These freaks couldn’t outwit a microwave. They’re not playing 4D chess, they’re playing Hungry Hungry Hippos and swallowing the marbles.

And we’ve all let it happen.

There are still jackasses out there pretending they can’t hear you because you’re wearing a mask. Like the sound waves are bouncing off the fabric and getting lost in the void between their ears. Never mind the fact that maybe, just maybe, you’re wearing it to protect someone you love. Maybe you’re a mom whose kid is immunocompromised, and you’re grinding through an eight-hour shift, breathing through a cloth because one cough could land them in the ICU. But that doesn’t matter to the freedom crusaders. To them, your mask is a personal attack on their ego, a challenge to their manhood, or whatever fragile nonsense they’re hiding behind this week.

The cruelty is the point. Kindness is mocked. Empathy is weakness. Try helping someone and you’ll be branded a “bleeding heart.” Ask a real question and you’re “too sensitive.” Want the truth? Good luck. The algorithm serves you rage, outrage, and whatever lies keep the wheels spinning and the ad revenue flowing.

Even our heroes are hollow now. Influencers peddling gut cleanses and fake apologies. Celebrities posting six-slide Notes app statements written by their PR teams after getting caught doing what everyone already knew they were doing. And the public eats it up like slop in a trough, forgetting by lunchtime because someone else got canceled for blinking weird.

Schools are banning books while toddlers get shot in preschools. Billionaires launch vanity rockets while teachers pay for pencils. The people who scream the loudest about “free speech” are the first to try and silence anyone who challenges their nonsense.

And the media? Forget it. Half of them are complicit, the other half are neutered. Truth died when headlines became clickbait and editors started worrying more about offending advertisers than informing the public. You want real reporting? Dig it up yourself, because most of what’s left is either infotainment or reworded press releases with a glossy sheen of false neutrality.

So, where does that leave the rest of us?

It leaves us pissed off. Tired. Screaming into the void while the dullards dance in the flames. But maybe that’s the wake-up call. Maybe we should stop playing nice. Stop pretending we can fix this shit with a tote bag and a petition.

Start calling idiocy what it is. Shine a light on the garbage. Laugh at the freak show, but never forget it’s real. And when someone says, “That’s just the way things are,” spit back, “Only if you let it be.”

Because common sense isn’t coming back on its own. Compassion won’t resurrect itself. Intelligence needs a backbone.

And it’s on us to stop sleepwalking through this dumpster fire and fight for a world that doesn’t treat decency like a punchline.
